Varsity Prep at Canal Shores Golf Course (Evanston)

Elite Invitation Only Training Program

The Varsity Prep program is designed for experienced high school golfers. This invitation-only program is for players interested in competing at the varsity level and being a leader on their respective high school team.

Participants should have a strong desire to play competitively, be serious about learning, and have demonstrated a dedication to improving their game which includes body and mind.

Group context will simulate pressure of tryouts/tournaments in a way that can’t be done on your own. The playing lesson at Sunset Valley Golf Course will give students and coaches an extended period of time on course together to give more direction for which areas of the student’s game needs the most improvement.

Students will be expected to play in the TGP Junior Tour events on Monday afternoons and have at least one 30-minute practice session per week outside of class.

The group classes at Canal Shores will be a mix of skill stations and competitive gaming. The skill stations will give students the opportunity to check in on different aspects of their game. The competitive gaming is designed to get students out of their comfort zone and simulate the pressure of tryouts and tournament play.

Coaches will work with students to debrief on course and tournament play to identify their individual strengths and weaknesses in their golf skills, mental skills, and course management skills, and develop a plan to improve as quickly as possible.

This program will provide students with:

Putting: Start line and distance control.
Around the green: Using the bounce of the club, returning the loft, and being able to handle various lies and situations.
Full Swing: Swinging the weight of the club. Rotation. Clubface control. Shots inside 100 yards.
Course Management: Choosing targets based on dispersion and ball flight.
Mindset: Preparing for a shot and accepting the outcome. Managing ego and expectations.

Our staff has created a document (below) to assist families in deciding on a tournament schedule for their junior golfer. It’s never too early to start planning for the spring, summer and fall. Illinois Junior Golf Association (IJGA) registration opened February 2, 2021 to certain players.

The quantity of events you might play in is something that differs from player to player, depending on their experience and comfort level, so don’t feel like you have to follow our recommendations exactly.  Our advice for Varsity Prep students is highlighted in yellow. If you would like to discuss this more in detail, please contact your TGP coach or email us at info@thegolfpractice.com
