High School Prep 14u
Holistic Training for Competitive Junior Golfers
High School Prep 14u, formerly High School Prep, is a program designed for 6th-8th graders who have graduated the 11u program. Students in 14u often have tournament experience and are working towards achieving favorable tournament results. Students in this program typically play multiple sports but have aspirations of playing high school golf in the near future.
Our coaching is rooted from the students perspective; how we communicate with them and how they best learn. We stress guiding students, not managing. Our stations and game nights are designed to encourage adaptation, exploration, not perfection. We have found that this undoubtedly leads to greater enjoyment and long-term improvement, rather than your stereotypical golf instruction.
This program focuses on developing key foundations to a sound and adaptive game, including:
- Clubface Awareness – Students will explore ways to point the clubface left, right, middle, as well as learn their personal clubface tendencies. Are they net open or closed? What elements can they explore to push it in the other direction?
- Swing Direction Pliability – Students will learn to work the ball both ways in order to neutralize their pattern if it becomes too extreme. This is the sign of an adaptive player who eliminates penalty shots with sound strategy and technique.
- Face Contact Exploration – Students will gain an understanding of their normal strike pattern, whether it is more toward the toe or the heel. They will become skilled at hitting different parts of the clubface, which will empower students to troubleshoot on their own when it’s too far from the center.
- Ground Contact Consistency – Being able to control where you strike the ground is imperative to becoming a more consistent player. Students will be given tools to build this skill and self correct during on course situations.
- Increasing Speed – To become an accomplished player, speed is a crucial ingredient to maximizing distance. Our TGP Body team has created an advanced system to increase student’s speed within a 7-8 week session. We will measure student’s progress from the start of the session to the end, with specific drills geared towards bringing out student’s inner athlete.
- Short Game Versatility – Students will hone their ability to hit a low, medium, and high trajectory shot around the green, as well as strategies to limit two-chips. They will develop a steady stroke, be able to start the ball on line with proper speed, and erase three-putts.
Our staff has created a document (below) to assist families in deciding on a tournament schedule for their junior golfer.
The quantity of events you might play in is something that differs from player to player, depending on their experience and comfort level, so don’t feel like you have to follow our recommendations exactly. If you would like to discuss this more in detail, please contact your TGP coach or email us at [email protected]
