Varsity Prep

Invitation Only Training Program

The Varsity Prep program is aimed for high school students that share a love of golf. This invitation-only program is for players who have a desire to play competitively, be serious about learning, but might not have the time to fully commit to golf.

The flexible structure of Varsity Prep allows our students to improve their golf game in a competitive group environment. Summer Varsity Prep is a program designed for current high school golfers with the desire to play Varsity Golf. Hank Haney, former coach to Tiger Woods, and current TGP Academy Advisor, teaches that the easiest way to lower scores is to eliminate penalty strokes, 3-putts and 2-chips. The Varsity Prep Training is designed to help each student identify why they make these mistakes, what they can do to fix them, and then give them the opportunity on the course to practice.

The Tuesday class will meet at The Golf Practice, where students will be able to use TrackMan and learn about their “big miss,” learning how to make corrections in their technique and their strategy to avoid penalty strokes. Students will be taught a reliable chip, pitch and bunker shot. They will also be taught putting from a distance control perspective, designed at eliminating 3-putts.

The Thursday class will meet at Sunset Valley Golf Club where students will play 9 holes with a coach. They will be given different tasks to bring awareness and control to their tempo, tension, and balance as well as their mindset while on the course. Coaches will also help with strategy by teaching students how to select a proper target on their tee shots, and approach shots into greens.

This program will provide students with:

  • Advanced swing analysis – Instructors will work with students to develop individual swing projects that are customized to the student’s biomechanics, and students will learn how to effectively practice these new movement patterns and understand their progression.
  • Greater understanding of their emotions and mental strength – Students will be taught strategies for accepting and embracing the difficulties and frustrations that often accompany learning. This is done with mindfulness, a training that leads to being present to our experiences more often and cultivating the capacity to let go of disappointments, frustrations, anger and anxiety, more quickly.
  • Monitoring progress – All too often, good students will have a tendency to over-correct a swing concept or have technique that begins to shift in a bad direction without the player being aware. This program will equip students with the necessary mental resources to notice these clues and fix them before harm is done.

Our golf instructors have created a document (below) to assist families in deciding on a tournament schedule for their junior golfer.

The quantity of events you might play in is something that differs from player to player, depending on their experience and comfort level, so don’t feel like you have to follow our recommendations exactly. Our advice for Varsity Prep students is highlighted in yellow. If you would like to discuss this more in detail, please contact your TGP coach or email us at [email protected].
